Since Penny’s passing we’ve been creating little memories, moments, objects, projects. For us at least, it’s a pivotal part of our healing. Recently our next door neighbors reached out to us about creating a little library in honor of Penny. They had acquired a little free library from a local boy scout and asked if I wanted to decorate it. I jumped at the opportunity with a lightness in my heart. Every new project in honor of her is a refresh, a restart, a way to bring her back in a new way.
This library was no exception, a chance to make something that would give back to children in the neighborhood seemed perfect. I painstakingly planned and photoshopped, trying to get the design just right for her. Like something out of a story book. I incorporated the quote we had been using to inspire us while she was in the NICU: “and though she be but little, she is fierce” – A Midsummer Nights Dream, immortalized in an incredible hand lettered piece of art work from our friend Emily. On the other side I pulled a quote from my favorite childhood series Harry Potter, which Rick had been reading to me while I was pregnant with her. The details culminating in the perfect little library nestled between our two homes filled with children’s books. It felt like Christmas morning when I saw a mom and her daughter take a book from it for the first time.
It’s things like Penny’s library that help me through the dark times. Buying special books, planting little goodies during the holidays. At a times when I am missing her so deeply, it’s a comfort. I am so thankful that I can create joy for others in honor of her.
If you are in Homewood please stop by and see our little library! Grab a book for a kiddo you love or bring one to share with the children in our neighborhood.
While you’re there, leave a penny and make a wish. I know it will bring you luck.
